Response to text guidelines (provincial exam):In answering the written-response question, students should be able to develop a multi-paragraph answer of at least 300 words. Students should make specific reference to the text. Students should be able to support a position, interpretation or response by citing specific details, features and information from the poem, passage, short story, novel or film. Responses should be constructed with complete and effective sentences and adhere to the conventions of standard written English.
Essay should include:
Intro paragraph (General statements narrowing down to specific thesis) Support Paragraphs: Clear and organized paragraph that is supported with direct quotes from the story Transition between paragraphs Writing in third person and present tense Concluding Paragraph: Restates the thesis and summarizes key arguments. An ending with a powerful or thought provoking comment
Essay will be assessed on the 6 point scale with the consideration of the usual 4 factors:
1. Content (Student demonstrates understanding of the concept of contrast. Student provides appropriate and insightful references to the story (quotes) to support ideas). 2. Style (Vocuabulary, sentence structure, literary techniques) 3. Form (Essay and paragraph organization, transitions, Intro and conclusion) 4. Conventions (spelling, grammar, punctuation, verb tense)
