We were honoured today to watch a very powerful and emotional performance by Stephanie Squakin. Stephanie did a wonderful job explaining how she used art and performance to pull herself through and beyond a very difficult experience, and how she was able (though her abilities as an artist) to share her story with others.
Today we were very lucky to listen to Katherine Palmer Gordon speak about her book "We Are Born with the Songs Inside Us: Lives and Stories of First Nations People in British Columbia". Katherine gave us the background to various stories presented in the book as well as her motivation for writing such an important collection of biographies. She addressed questions on both the experience of being a writer and the issues faced by people of Aboriginal ancestry in contemporary Canadian Society. Anne Tenning (who is featured in one of the chapters) also attended and added commentary.
In Part II of "Keeper 'N Me" Garnet describes his introduction to Keeper and begins to understand the lessons and wisdom that can be gained from someone with far more life experience. Today students interviewed senior citizens in our local community and recorded the interviews on the iPads. On Monday we will debrief and start writing up the interviews.
What an great day. Thank you so much to Morgan and Jonah and Wes (and Aaron) for getting 2 deer and then showing the class how to clean, skin, butcher and smoke the meat. Both the grade 12s and the grade 10s got an excellent demonstration. Thanks as well to Clint George for the stories and background that he provided for both classes. It was a truly memorable day.
Thanks to Lana for coming in today to demonstrate the process for making Snow Brush (Buck Brush) tea. We learned about the process for making the tea, as well as purposes for drinking. It was also a great inspiration for some work on descriptive language.
