Discussed the TRC events in Vancouver today and introduced Rita Joe's poem "Who are you?". Finished with students visually re-creating the key ideas with the Vine app. Thank you to Ms. Anne Tenning, our district principal for Aboriginal Education who lead our first talking circle today. It was the first experience in a talking circle for most members of the class, and it will be a consistent way to share and problem solve in the future. I would also like to thank Ms. Tenning for the beautiful mini drum that is the object we will use during our talking circles. We finished the class by looking at magazines that we wouldn't normally choose for reading material. The Magazine write-up will be finished on Monday. Have a great weekend! We used the story "Raven Steals The Sun" to explore advantages and disadvantages of different ways to communicate information. We worked with the story in written and oral format. Students then re-created the story in either an artistic or dramatic form and then we finished by watching the short film from "Raven Tales". Students finished with reflections on differing perspectives about how we (as humans) got here, as well as advantages and disadvantages of oral, written, artistic, dramatic and digital forms of expression. Short day today. Glad to meet everyone for the first time! 3 responsibilities before tomorrow:
1. Be prepared to summarize the PURPOSE or LESSON from the short activity we did in class today in one sentence. 2. Fill out the class survey. 3. Give Mr. Killick a compliment! See you tomorrow! We have class 2nd period. I hope you have all had a wonderful summer and are gearing up for your final year of high school. It is my goal that the next 5 months we have together will be both memorable and meaningful. I look forward to meeting all of you on Tuesday!
